Mathematics is fun, exciting, wondrous and beautiful. When studying mathematics you are studying something older than language; you are studying the Human Race's intellectual development. All the great civilisations of the world gave us great mathematicians and mathematicians are always breaking new ground; we would not have had the digital revolution without prior mathematical thought. Mathematics provides a powerful universal language and intellectual toolkit for abstraction, generalisation and synthesis. It enables us to probe the natural universe and to develop new technologies that have helped us control and master our environment, and change societal expectations and standards of living. Mathematical skills are highly valued and sought after. We hope, through our teaching, to share with you the joy of this mathematical journey, indeed our vision for teaching mathematics is that
Students should experience positive, challenging and motivational learning in order to appreciate the structure, joy and potential of mathematics. The subject thrives at Frensham because of our enthusiasm and joy in teaching. It is one of the most popular choices at Advanced level; with a significant number of students studying Further Mathematics. We believe that student learning is best achieved in a collaborative, supportive environment where high expectations are fostered. We seek to develop confident, autonomous, independent learners who have a shared ownership of their mathematical progress. In the classroom, full participation in lessons is the best way to achieve a learning culture that enables sustained understanding. So you will be encouraged to discuss ideas, ask for advice or clarification when you need to and there is even the possibility of teaching lessons, if you wish. You will be encouraged to experiment, try things out and inevitably make mistakes. Saying ‘I don't know' is an option, for if we are to improve, we must learn from our mistakes and address our learning weaknesses. We will help you every step of the way in your particular mathematical journey; staff are always prepared to discuss issues with you during the day, or in some cases well into the night.
