Information and Communication Technology is used by all pupils in the course of their lessons across the curriculum. Pupils in Years 3 to 9 also receive an hour each week of discrete skills teaching in one of two networked IT suites. The emphasis is on equipping pupils with skills which they will need throughout the curriculum and in their life beyond school. A wide variety of applications are covered ranging from basic word processing and spreadsheets to website design, video editing and manipulation of graphics. Recent projects have included year 9 pupils designing on screen maths worksheets for year 5, year 4 pupils presenting automatic narrated nursery rhymes and year 6 pupils making cartoons warning of the dangers of smoking.
Pupils can choose to continue ICT beyond year 9 by opting to take a GCSE or AS level qualification in the subject. They look at ICT as a subject in its own right, covering applications in more depth and put together mini systems to solve real life problems. Recent AS projects have included creating a booking system for the school theatre and designing a website for an external catering company. Pupils develop a methodical approach to problem solving, learn how to analyse information and make critical judgments and build up an awareness of the social, economic and ethical implications of using technology.
